More than half the reel time is spent on recreating memorable moments from the first film. But the makers don’t add any new dimension to the film or the characters. Give this confusing film a miss. Two couples — Akaash and Imon, Vicky and Riya — are at different ‘cross’roads in life. Akaash’s priority is to get married, Imon wants to become a famous choreographer, Vicky aspires for roti, kapda and makaan and Riya dreams of a baby. What happens when their paths ‘cross’?Now, here’s a relationship story with a difference. Akaash has a steady relationship with his phone, Imon shares a special bond with dance, Riya is serious about her thoughts (and hand cream?), and Vicky is enamoured of his laptop.
Even Akaash’s roommate/ friend Swarajit has a long-standing relationship — with bananas (he has been chomping them down since 2009, when Cross Connection released)! And when the four main characters are not obsessing over their primary partners, Akaash pesters Imon to marry him, Imon hurls abuses at Akaash, Riya nags Vicky about having a baby and Vickyphew, he’s just tired. No connection found? And hence, the makers press the redial button and bring back long lost contacts from the past.More than half the reel time is spent on recreating memorable moments from the first film. Akaash still waits under the verandah and mindlessly walks into the downpour, searching for network.
Swarajit still drops all his work to return home and answer Nature’s call. Imon dances whenever and wherever she feels like, and the ever busy Vicky still takes Imon to coffee shops.
Even Jams (Neel Mukherjee) and Didi (Rupanjana) seem to be perennially on ‘flight mode’ — they are always on their way to the airport! Reason behind the rewind? Unreachable.Neel Dutt maintains the continuity from CC with his music — the tracks from CC2 are apt for a 2009 release. Lilabali Lilabali — the picturisation of which reminds of Gal mithi mithi from Aisha (with the gold-and-red colour theme, outdoor mandap and wedding sequence) — is the only song that makes a ‘connect’. It’s a good-looking film in the sense that Sabarni Das has done a refreshing job with the costumes — retaining the defining aspects of the characters while adding spunk to the frames. All the actors from the previous film seamlessly blend into their roles in CC2. Ritwick and Rimjhim are endearing as Akaash and Imon, but Shayan and Tonushree’s chemistry as Vicky and Riya only comes across in the song sequences. Ritwick is particularly charming as the back-scratching, phone-dismantling, poetry-reciting Akaash, and complements Rimjhim’s free-spirited Imon. But the makers don’t add any new dimension to the film or the characters.
The movie’s more of ‘Akon (that’s Akaash and Imon) and Their Almost Adventures’, than Cross Connection. If the director duo has a third film in mind, they should reconsider their plans as it will only result in a serious case of ‘crosstophobia’. As for the connection? Please try again later.
